Dear CalMatters reader,

Protesters filled the streets as helicopters circled overhead and tear gas hung in the air. Despite objections from the state’s governor and the city’s mayor, President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles following a series of immigration raids. Demonstrators gathered across the city to denounce the arrests. Freelance photojournalists Ted Soqui and J.W. Hendricks documented the unprecedented events for CalMatters.

This month’s visual collection also features audio engineer Sandy Stone, community gatherings and initiatives, as well as environmental changes like the declining California gull population at Mono Lake. These images highlight the vital role of photography in documenting both historic events and everyday moments of communities across the state.

Sincerely,
