Dear CalMatters reader,

This month’s newsletter shares glimpses from around the state, including an inside look at Mi Escuelita, a San Diego preschool serving children affected by family trauma, including domestic violence. In classrooms focused on therapy and play, teachers and on-site therapists help students identify and regulate their emotions, while families receive support through counseling and parent engagement programs.

Mi Escuelita is considered a model for trauma-informed early education. “Ideally, the norm should be like Mi Escuelita, especially since there’s so many kids who could benefit from it,” said Elizabeth Gibot, a parent at the school.

Photojournalism like this demonstrates the power of visuals to not only better understand and document challenges, but also to shine a light on what’s working.

Sincerely,

Jenny Stratton
