Dear CalMatters reader,

Images of the wildfires in Los Angeles County offer visceral windows into the pain, grief and devastation faced by hundreds of thousands of people.

Photojournalist Sarahbeth Maney, who recently moved back to Los Angeles just before the fires were ignited, reflected on her work in the field: "These photographs were taken just minutes after I met Kim and Wendell, who graciously invited me to walk with them to the site of their home. I learned that this was Kim’s second time losing everything in a house fire. But this time, she lost the home her parents had passed down to her 30 years ago. Like many others, Kim’s story reflects the generational legacies that have made Altadena such a unique and tight-knit community."

Amid the destruction, mutual aid efforts have emerged, with first responders, volunteers, neighbors, friends, and strangers coming together to support those affected. "I never thought when I came home Tuesday night that I wouldn’t have a home Wednesday night," Wendell Hood said, his words a reminder of the shock and uncertainty that many are still experiencing.

Sincerely,

Jenny Stratton
