Dear Reader,

Welcome to the November edition of California in Pictures.

As a turbulent and historic election cycle comes to a close, photojournalists have captured defining moments of the process—from the preparation and turnout at polling places to the energy of campaign rallies and election night gatherings. Their images reveal stories behind the vote, providing a powerful record of democracy in action.

“Covering this election, from rallies in swing states to the Central Valley where I grew up, allowed me to see and hear a wide range of views, perspectives and concerns of many Americans,” shared CalMatters’ photojournalist and CatchLight Local Fellow, Larry Valenzuela.

In this edition, we feature a collection of photographs documenting the election on both national and local scales. We also highlight work from Hiram Alejandro Durán, staff photojournalist and CatchLight Local Fellow at El Timpano, who combines stills and motion to show how unspent funding meant to address lead contamination in Oakland communities is leaving residents—especially children—vulnerable to serious health risks.

These local photojournalists continue to shed light on the long-term outcomes of the election and the ongoing stories that will shape California's future.

Sincerely,

Jenny Stratton
