Dear Reader,

Welcome to the September edition of California in Pictures. This month’s collection of photojournalism brings into focus some of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s recent policy actions around crime, clean energy, job creation and his current stance on withholding state funding from local governments until they fix the homelessness crisis.

We also feature portraits from CatchLight Local Fellow and Berkeleyside photojournalist Ximena Natera’s portable photo studio, which was set up for Afro Revolution Day at the Tarea Hall Pittman Branch Library in Berkeley. While having their portrait made, attendees shared their joyful reflections on celebrating Black hair.

Delene Richburg, photographed with her daughters, remarked, “I love my hair and I am trying to instill in the girls a love for their own hair and heritage. What I appreciate about our Black African hair is its versatility, from afro puffs to braids. Taking care of our hair has become a cherished ritual for us.”

Thank you for joining us this month. We hope these images and stories inspire and inform.

Sincerely,

Jenny Stratton
