Dear CalMatters reader,

Each year is unique in the joy, wonder, challenges, and heartache it brings. However, every year the photographers and visual journalists we work with remain dedicated to documenting events, changes, individuals, and communities throughout the state.

As we begin a new year of California in Pictures, we’re taking a moment to look back at the past year through images that highlight the people, places, and events that shaped life across our state. These photographs tell a collective story of California as seen by those who live here. We’re excited for the year ahead, including sharing even more photography from our readers .If you have images from your community, submit them here and help us continue building this portrait of California, one photograph at a time.

Sincerely,

Jenny Stratton

Executive Editor, CatchLight
