Bio
Mike McGuire, 44, is the new Senate president pro tem, taking over from Sen. Toni Atkins. McGuire was elected to the Healdsburg school board when he was 19. In 2004, McGuire was elected to the Healdsburg City Council. He was elected to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors in 2010. Four years later, he easily won election to assume his Senate seat. Known as a moderate in the Democratic caucus, McGuire has advocated for wildfire prevention and cannabis industry reforms. A Sonoma State University graduate, he’s married with a son. The family has a pug named Gertrude.
